What do I enjoy about this book and what did I learn from it?
During the holidays, I read this book entitled "Sold,Patricia McCormick" . This book actually won the National Book Award Finalist , no regrets reading this book ! What I really enjoy about this book is that , I get to learn more about how Lakshmi felt and what she went through.Lakshmi is an 13 year old teenager that lives with her desperately poor family, in a small hut in Nepal. At that point of time, her family was in need of money, therefore her stepfather introduce her to a glamorous stranger who tells her she will find her a job as a maid working for a wealthy woman in the city.Lakshmi undertakes the long journey to India and arrives at the house. But as soon as she learns the unthinkable truth, she has been sold into prostitution. What I really learn from this story is that , do not trust people that easily just to get money. Eventhough that was her stepfather, she was desperate for money to help her family. Therefore she was glad that her stepfather introduce her to that stranger. She went through a lot of thick and thins when she was in India. She had to pay for whatever she wanted, pillow, bed and even her food. As he was a prostitude, she had to pay 500 rupees for the shot of dirty hands doctor gives her once a month so that she wont become pregnant.Lakshmi was threathen when she was there too.But she didn't live long as Mumtaz warned her before, if he sees her little book of figures, he will bury her alive..She then realize that she was buried alive when she wrote this story.Pity Lakshmi that she has to go through all of those torture alone.
